Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty has been a near-perfect series thus far, giving the Captain America books exactly what they needed. Issue #8 is another one that reads like just as you thought it couldn’t get better, it somehow does.
Issue #6 was poised to be an interesting issue, with Emma Frost paying Steve her favor from the Hellfire Gala. The initial Hellfire Gala issue’s joke about how Emma reminds Steve of his mother turning into somewhat of an inside joke between the two is a fun bit. It’s goofy in the best way and Steve’s shy demeanor with Sharon is downright charming. All Steve and Emma did at that Gala was talk and his bashfulness towards Sharon who tells him “of course you can have a life and go to parties without me, Steve” is so cute. Emma’s unique sense of humor is utilized quite often in this issue, spending most of the issue f—–g with people in her usual (self proclaimed) snobbish way. One of Emma’s best qualities is that she’s always been self aware and willing to lean into the bit and Lanzing and Kelly do a great job with Emma’s playful side.

It also does a great job to show just what a strong couple Steve and Sharon are, with her never having to doubt their relationship even when characters like Emma Frost show up.
Seeing two (formerly oppositional) superheroes actually work together and be on friendly terms with one another is also fun, particularly when so often these days teams are always at each others’ throats. That’s part of what makes Lanzing and Kelly’s Captain America so good, they bring Cap books back to their basics — this is a story about good guys vs. bad guys and punching fascists is celebrated.

Carnero’s art is astounding, with every character being wonderfully expressive — you truly couldn’t ask for a better artist on this book. Lanzing and Kelly are writing some great Steve and Sharon, but it’s Carnero’s art that gives them the polish that makes it perfect. When the art needs to show a tender moment like the one between Steve and Sharon, Carnero’s pencils portray the scene flawlessly. The art also thrives in the serious, more striking moments. Sentinel of Liberty is truly a beautiful book from start to finish.
