The highly-anticipated The Last of Us HBO television adaptation gets the vintage comic book treatment from artist JustRalphy in stunning fan art.
The Last of Us HBO television series gets the vintage comic book treatment in stunning fan art. The upcoming horror drama is based on the PlayStation 3 game of the same name and centers on the relationship between rugged survivor Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) and 14-year-old orphan Ellie (Bella Ramsey). After a smuggling deal falls through, Joel and his partner Tess (Anna Torv) are tasked to deliver Ellie across the zombie-infested United States to a violent revolutionary group known as the Fireflies. Reluctant at first, Joel wants nothing to do with his precocious cargo, but he soon comes to realize Ellie's importance to the fate of the world.
With The Last of Us premiere a month away, JustRalphy took to social media to share his stunning vintage comic book fan art. The artist has decided to adapt images from release material to create old-fashioned The Last of Us comic book covers. Each chapter corresponds with a chapter in the original video game. However, due to a setting change for the HBO series, the video game chapter Pittsburgh has been changed to Kansas City. The artist also created an alternate image for Chapter 3: The Outskirts featuring a Clicker. Check out the artwork below:
JustRalphy's art beautifully captures moments from the upcoming HBO adaptation that match the story beats of the original game. Set photos and videos taken during The Last of Us' production demonstrate the amount of care the series creators put into recreating the look and feel of the source material. The Last of Us trailers have shown nothing but faithful reproductions of the original game's scenes, including dialogue taken directly from the video game.
However, there have been several significant changes to the elements within the story. As noted previously, the city of Pittsburgh, a major obstacle in the game, has been changed to Kansas City. This location harbors a wild and violent survivor group in the game that ravages any invaders. The show gives them a leader named Kathleen who will be portrayed by Melanie Lynskey in live-action. The Pittsburgh chapter also introduces Henry and Sam, two brothers who were separated following an attack. Although the characters are included in the television series, Sam (Keivonn Woodard) is now deaf, a character that was hearing-abled in the original game.
While at this year's CCXP, The Last of Us series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann also teased brand new mind-blowing story additions for the show, including scenes that were originally cut from the game. Although the series' powerful story will remain faithful to the source material, it appears there will also be plenty of new content for returning franchise fans. With The Last of Us debuting on HBO January 15, audiences do not have to wait much longer to see Joel and Ellie's heart-wrenching journey brought to life.
